Accellion reached an 8.1 million settlement in its class-action data breach lawsuit with the approximately 9.2 million individuals impacted by the monthslong hack of its file transfer. We are working to resolve the situation as expeditiously as possible. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Stanford will also provide these services as appropriate to other affected individuals. Please also note that Stanford University, Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children’s Health all offer identity theft protection services to all employees. Hackers obtained this data by exploiting security weaknesses in software offered by Washington’s vendor, Accellion. Email addresses are provided on our webpage. On February 1, 2021, the Office of the Washington State Auditor announced a massive data breach that compromised personal information of approximately 1.6 million individuals in the State of Washington. As best practice, all individuals should continue to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity or suspected identity theft to our Privacy Offices. With the help of a leading cyber-forensics firm, we are analyzing the stolen data and will notify affected individuals as appropriate. Law enforcement has been notified. We will provide regular updates to our community via a dedicated webpage. The breach was part of a larger national cyberattack on universities, companies and organizations that use the Accellion FTA. Stanford University School of Medicine has learned of a data breach that is part of a cyber incident involving a third-party file-sharing service, called File Transfer Appliance (FTA), provided by Accellion Inc. We are writing to inform you of a cybersecurity incident. The forensic firm concluded the threat actor did not move from the Accellion FTA server into any Qualys environment and that Qualys’ existing security rules would not have allowed any such access between the Accellion FTA server and Qualys’ corporate and production environment.
